Preventative Health Care
Immunization against contagious diseases and an annual physical exam are important steps in keeping your pet healthy and happy. In the past few years, many changes have been recommended by various veterinary and academic organizations. Dr. Riedl will make recommendations for your pet based on the latest scientifically proven protocols. Some general guidelines are:
Dogs:
Distemper/Hepatitis/Parvovirus at 8, 12, 16 weeks and 1 year of age,
then boostered every 3 years
Leptospirosis at 12 and 16 weeks of age, boostered annually
Parainfluenza and bordetella at 12 weeks of age, boostered annually
Rabies at 16 weeks of age, boostered at 1 year, then every 3 years
Lyme at 12 and 16 weeks of age, then boostered annually
Giardia for those dogs that spend time outdoors or are boarded
Heartworm preventative year round, test every other year
Fecal (check for internal parasites) done at 8 and 16 weeks, then annually
Neuter (spay or castration) at or after 6 months of age
Cats:
Distemper/Upper Respiratory Virus (Panleukopenia, Calici, Rhinotracheitis)
at 8, 12 and 16 weeks of age, boostered every 1 to 3 years
Rabies at 16 weeks of age, boostered at one year, then every 3 years
Feline Leukemia virus blood test as kitten, immunization at 12 and 16 weeks,
then an annual booster. Recommended only for outdoor cats and kittens.
Fecal examination at 8 and 16 weeks of age, then annually
Neuter (spay or castration) at or after 6 months of age
Declaw can be done at 12 weeks of age, but often done at time of neutering
